Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This Colt Model 1860 Army .44 caliber percussion muzzle loading two revolver set was manufactured in 1977 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the inception of the United States Cavalry. The serial number range is US0001 to US3020. The case accommodates the two revolvers and all of the accessories. The set includes two revolvers, a walnut presentation case including two keys, a detachable 3rd model shoulder stock, a ‘stand of flags’ powder flask, blued two cavity bullet mold, ‘L’ shaped nipple wrench, a cap tin (empty). Each revolver has extended side plate screws to attach the shoulder stock. The Colt 1860 Army revolver was the official sidearm of the U.S. Cavalry from 1860 - 1873. This revolver had the highest production numbers during the American Civil War. It is estimated that over 127,156 were delivered for use during the Civil War. There were approximately 200,700 revolvers manufactured between 1860 - 1873. Historically, the earliest models had the Hartford Ct. address and later models had the New York, N.Y. address.

The Colt .44-caliber “Army" Model was the most widely used revolver of the Civil War. It had a six-shot, rotating cylinder, and fired a 0.454-inch-diameter (11.5 mm) round spherical lead ball, or a conical-tipped bullet, typically propelled by a 30-grain charge of black powder, which was ignited by a small copper percussion cap that contained a volatile charge of fulminate of mercury. The percussion cap, when struck by the hammer, ignited the powder charge. When fired, balls had a muzzle velocity of about 900 feet per second (274 meters/second), although this depended on how much powder it was loaded with.
