Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington 788 is a bolt-action, centerfire rifle produced by Remington Arms from 1967 to 1983. It features a single-column detachable magazine, holding three rounds for larger calibers and four rounds for .222 Rem and .223 Rem. A .22 rimfire version, known as the 580, 581, or 582, was also produced, depending on its feeding method. Additionally, the .22 caliber target model, the 540X, was used by the U.S. military for training and later sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Two key design features set the Remington 788 apart. The first is the rear-lugged bolt, which has nine lugs arranged in three rows of three. These lugs lock into the receiver behind the magazine well, allowing the bolt handle to lift only 60 degrees upon opening, providing more clearance for scopes compared to the 90 degrees needed for rifles like the Model 700. The rear-lugged design also reduces bolt travel. The second distinguishing feature is the receiver. The 788 has a smaller ejection port than many similar rifles and lacks bolt lug raceways.

Its single-stack magazine design results in a narrower feed opening, and the receiver has more steel around the ejection port and feed port. This makes the 788's receiver more rigid and stronger than many competing designs, including the Remington 700, despite having the same external receiver diameter. This added rigidity reduces barrel deflection during firing, which improves the rifle's accuracy, making the Remington 788 known for its precision.
