Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 14, commonly referred to as the K-38 Masterpiece, is a .38 Special double-action revolver, built on the square-butt K target frame with a 5-screw design. It is the successor to the postwar K-38 Target Masterpiece. The revolver features a 6-shot, fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56". Initially, it was equipped with a 6-inch pinned and ribbed barrel, with an 8-3/8" barrel becoming available in later production runs. The finish is typically blue, though nickel versions are rare. The front sight is a 1/10" or 1/8" Patridge style, paired with a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight. The grips are checkered walnut magna style, with S&W medallions. Key features include a serrated trigger (either .265" or .500"), with an adjustable travel stop, and a .375" or .500" target hammer. Early postwar models feature a 6-groove backstrap and forestrap, while later production models have a 10-groove, serrated backstrap and forestrap. As is typical for K-frame revolvers, the gas ring design varies between engineering models. With a weight of 38.5 oz for the 6-inch barrel and 42.5 oz for the 8-3/8" barrel, the Model 14 is closely matched in weight to the K-22 Masterpiece and K-32 Masterpiece, making it a fitting companion for target shooting competitions. The Model 14 was produced from approximately 1947 to 1982, with the first reported serial number being K1661.
