Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1977, Browning, a venerable importer of firearms from Europe and Japan under its esteemed banner, made a momentous entry into the American market by introducing the Sig Sauer P220. Renowned as the Browning Double Action, or BDA, this debut marked a significant expansion beyond the company's traditional offerings, encompassing not only the standard 9mm caliber but also emerging choices like .38 Super Auto and .45 ACP, catering to a diverse range of preferences and needs.
Initially imported under the Browning Double Action (BDA) label, the P220 later assumed the Sigarms P220 name upon further distribution. Notably, the early P220 models distributed by Browning in the United States, spanning from approximately 1977 to 1980, featured a distinctive heel-mounted magazine release lever. However, this feature fell out of favor and was eventually discontinued from Browning's lineup in the early 1980s, owing to lackluster sales and its futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of military rifles like the AR-15/M16.
These specific P220 models, affectionately referred to as Browning BDAs, bear distinctive markings that serve as hallmarks of their lineage. On the left-hand side of the slide, intricate stampings proudly declare 'Browning Arms Company Morgan, Utah and Montreal PQ,' while the right-hand side proudly displays 'SIG-Sauer System Made in W. Germany,' alongside the serial number, epitomizing a blend of European craftsmanship and American innovation.
