Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Following World War II, Colt was among the first firearms manufacturers to embrace innovative "Space Age" materials like aluminum. Their pioneering effort began with the introduction of the aluminum-framed Colt Commander automatic in 1949. This was followed by the release of an aluminum-framed version of the Detective Special, which Colt named the Cobra, utilizing their proprietary aluminum alloy known as “Coltalloy.” The Colt Cobra was a groundbreaking model, marking the debut of Colt’s iconic snake-themed nomenclature. This new model was essentially a Detective Special fitted with an aluminum frame, side plate, and cylinder crane, while retaining a steel barrel and other critical components.

Produced from 1950 to 1981, the Cobra went through significant updates over the years. The Second Issue Cobra, manufactured from 1973 to 1981, featured notable design enhancements. It was available in various finishes, including bright blue and bright nickel, and occasionally in a satin Electroless nickel finish known as "Coltguard." During the Colt strike, a distinctive matte black version was also offered. The updated Cobra design included a robust heavy barrel with a shrouded ejector rod and a long ramp front sight. Additionally, it came equipped with walnut combat grips that wrapped around the front and bottom of the grip frame, providing improved durability and handling.
