This example is a rare Colt Diamondback Rattlesnake Edition that features gold inlays depicting the Rampant Colt in a desert scene over a rattlesnake with a small 1 of 500 banner on the left side. A gold inlay desert scene with a larger rattlesnake along the right side of the frame. The cylinder has repeating gold foliate scrolls along the flutes, and the barrel has foliate scrolls with "Diamondback / .22 Long Rifle" on the left side and "Colt / Hartford CT" on the right.
Only 500 of these Colt Diamondback Rattlesnake Editions were produced, which makes them SUPER RARE and FEVERISHLY SOUGHT AFTER by Colt collectors around the world!
According to the owner...this example has been in the safe for 40 years and is in unfired New Old Stock condition!

Markings: Standard / The frame has gold inlays depicting the Rampant Colt in a desert scene over a rattlesnake and a small banner with 1 of 500 on the left side and a desert scene with a larger rattlesnake along the right side. The cylinder has repeating gold foliate scrolls along the flutes. The barrel has foliate scrolls with "Diamondback / .22 Long Rifle" on the left side and "Colt / Hartford CT" on the right.
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1966, Colt introduced the Colt Diamondback revolver. The Diamondback was intended to be a premium quality adjustable sighted small framed revolver that would resemble the popular Python. The new Diamondback was built on the Colt "D" frame as used for the Detective Special, Police Positive Special, etc. It had a wide, long, grooved Target hammer, Target-type walnut grips, Colt Accro adjustable sight, and a barrel that looked like a Python barrel and was, in fact, built on Python machinery. Production of the Diamondback was from 1966 to 1991.
The Diamondback was available in bright blue, bright nickel, and later a few in satin Electroless nickel, also known as "Coltguard". Barrel lengths were 2 1/2 inches, 4 inches, and 6 inches. Calibers were .22LR and .38 Special. The 2 1/2 inch version was fitted with Service type grips, the 4 inch and 6 inch were fitted with Target grips. The 2 1/2 inch and 4 inch barrels have front sights that are machined as part of the barrel. The 6 inch barrel has a separate, pinned-in front sight of the same type as used on the Python, only with a single pin to retain it.
