Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Colt manufactured the M1911A1 for the military for many years before it was released to civilians with the name Colt Government Model. Colt changed the barrel bushing to enhance the Government Model's accuracy, and the revamped pistol was called the Colt Government Model Mark IV Series 70. Many Colt enthusiasts prefer the Series 70 as their favorite model. Although pre-war commercial Colts may be more refined and intricately designed, they are expensive collector's items, often costing several thousand dollars in mint condition. The Series 70 Colts, on the other hand, can still be found in excellent condition and were produced in Government Model and Commander sizes between 1970 and 1983.
This is a Colt MK IV Series '70 Government Model, produced in 1978, which is a Commercial Government Model manufactured during a period when some of the best work was created. It is a descendant of the original Model of 1911, with updates of the 1911-A1 and a collet-style bushing that enhances accuracy. According to the owner, "This pistol has been modified for competition shooting. I did not have this done. The previous owner, whom I know, had the modifications done. The gunsmith who performed this work was Ollie Olson. The modifications were done between 8-4-86 and 2-11-87. Some of the work done included a Videki speed trigger, and work done to smooth crisp 3 1/2lbs, installed and fit Wilson No. 66 stainless combat beavertail, install Wilson No. 3-D (3-Dot) high visibility combat sights, bob hammer and fit new Wilson grip safety, and polished throat and ramp." Whether you're looking to add to a Colt collection, want to have an excellent base for your custom build, or can just appreciate a steel-frame .45 pistol from the heyday of 1911, this is an outstanding addition to any safe in America.
