In 1978, the New Frontier was reintroduced as part of the 3rd Generation Colt Single Action Army series, with serial numbers beginning at 01001NF, marking the transition from the original four-digit format to a five-digit numbering system. This particular example was produced in 1978 (the first year of production) and bears serial number “03852NF”!

The Colt New Frontier series was introduced with the initial serial number 3000NF, which remained within the Colt manufacturing facility. The final examples of the 2nd Generation New Frontiers fell within the 72XXNF serial number range, with a total production of just over 4,000 units between 1961 and 1974. These early Colt Flat-Top Target six guns were offered in four calibers: .45 Colt, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, and .44 Special. According to Colt authority Don Wilkerson, the .38 Special is considered the rarest, followed closely by the .44 Special. Notably, fewer than 100 .45 Colt New Frontier Buntlines were produced.
