Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 581 is a classic American bolt-action rimfire rifle that exemplifies simplicity, durability, and precision. Chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges, the Model 581 offers exceptional versatility for target shooting, small game hunting, and casual plinking. This particular model features a 24-inch blued barrel, which delivers excellent accuracy while maintaining a well-balanced feel. The bead-blade front sight paired with an adjustable rear sight allows for precise iron sight shooting, and the grooved receiver is ready for scope mounting—making it easy to adapt for longer-range shooting. The rifle feeds from a detachable 5-round box magazine, which sits flush with the stock for a clean, streamlined look.

The smooth hardwood Monte Carlo stock adds a touch of traditional styling and functional ergonomics, providing a comfortable cheek weld whether shooting with open sights or a scope. The raised comb and pistol grip design enhance control and accuracy, especially when shooting off-hand. Introduced in 1967 and produced until 1983, the Model 581 was part of Remington's 500-series rimfires and is based on a simplified, yet rugged action that proved to be both reliable and accurate. Its bolt-action mechanism is known for being smooth and positive, and its steel construction ensures long-term durability. Though often overshadowed by more collectible rimfires, the 581 is a dependable workhorse that delivers consistent performance and remains a favorite among shooters who appreciate its straightforward, no-nonsense design.
