Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Old Army is a unique entry in the history of American black powder revolvers, representing a modern reinterpretation of a 19th-century design rather than a direct reproduction. Introduced in 1972, the Old Army was built on a frame derived from Ruger’s robust Blackhawk single-action revolver and chambered exclusively for black powder percussion loads. Unlike the Colt and Remington cap-and-ball revolvers of the Civil War era, which it loosely resembles, the Old Army was not intended as a faithful replica but rather as a contemporary, overbuilt black powder revolver designed with modern metallurgy and machining standards. It featured a six-shot cylinder, topstrap design reminiscent of the Remington New Model Army, and adjustable sights on most models, making it more durable, reliable, and user-friendly than period originals. Chambered in .44 caliber, though capable of handling heavier loads than most traditional percussion revolvers, the Old Army was designed with safety and performance in mind, able to handle consistent shooting without the fragility or concerns associated with antiques. Collectors and black powder enthusiasts value the Ruger Old Army both for its rugged performance and its position as the last black powder revolver to be introduced by a major American manufacturer. Its production spanned from 1972 until 2008, with stainless steel variants, fixed-sight models, and different grip frame configurations offered throughout its run. Unlike most percussion revolvers, the Old Army’s precision machining and stronger frame allowed shooters to push performance well beyond what historical designs could safely handle, earning it a reputation as the “magnum” of cap-and-ball revolvers. For reenactors and purists, its lack of historical authenticity may make it less appealing, but for practical black powder shooters, it is often considered the finest cap-and-ball revolver ever built. Today, discontinued for over a decade, the Old Army has become a sought-after collectible, especially in stainless steel or limited-edition configurations, while also retaining enduring respect as a working firearm capable of remarkable accuracy and reliability. It stands as an example of Ruger’s philosophy of combining tradition with modern engineering, offering shooters a durable and powerful black powder revolver unlike any other.
