Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 336 is a lever-action rifle and carbine manufactured by Marlin Firearms. It has been available in a variety of calibers and barrel lengths since its introduction in 1948. However, it is most commonly chambered in .30-30 Winchester or .35 Remington and typically uses a 20- or 24-inch barrel. At present, the model with a 24-inch barrel is only available in .30-30 Winchester. The Model 336 has returned to production as of March 27, 2023.
The Model 336 is a direct descendant of the Marlin Model 1893 rifle, which was produced from 1893 to 1936. Based on L.L. Hepburn's patents, the Model 1893 featured a new locking bolt system and a two-piece firing pin. The Model 1893 was later redesigned in 1936 and renamed the Model 1936 (later the Model 36) with only minor alterations to the stock, forearm, and sights. All of these firearms had a solid-top receiver made of forged steel and ejected fired cartridges from the side. Compared to the Winchester 94, which was the primary lever-action hunting rifle at the time, the Model 36 was somewhat heavier and had a simpler internal mechanism and a full pistol grip-type buttstock, as opposed to the Winchester 94's straight grip stock. In 1948, the Model 36 was replaced by the Model 336, which included the patents of Marlin employee Thomas R. Robinson, Jr. The Model 336 has been in continuous production under both the Marlin and Glenfield brands since 1948 and is currently manufactured by Ruger Firearms under the Marlin brand.
