The Marlin Model 336 lever-action rifle represents a significant evolution in firearm design, with a history tracing back to the late 19th century. First introduced in 1948, the Model 336 is a direct descendant of the Marlin Model 1893, which was renowned for its robust design and innovative features, including a new locking bolt system and a two-piece firing pin. The transition from the Model 1893 to the Model 1936, and subsequently to the Model 336, marked a series of incremental improvements that refined the lever-action rifle’s design. The Model 336 incorporated the patents of Thomas R. Robinson, Jr., resulting in enhanced functionality and reliability.

Notably, the Model 336 was developed to address some of the limitations of its predecessors, such as the Model 36, which, while functional, was heavier and featured a simpler internal mechanism compared to its Winchester counterpart. The Model 336 featured a solid-top receiver made of forged steel and side ejection of fired cartridges, improving the rifle’s performance and ease of use. It also introduced a more ergonomic design with a full pistol-grip buttstock, distinguishing it from the straight-grip stock of the Winchester 94.
Throughout its production run, which has continued under Ruger Firearms since 2023, the Model 336 has been offered in various configurations, accommodating different barrel lengths from 16 to 24 inches and chambering options including .30-30 Winchester and .35 Remington. The rifle's versatility has ensured its enduring popularity, with over 3.5 million units sold by 1983, making it one of the top-selling high-powered sporting rifles in U.S. history. Its design innovations and adaptability to various hunting and shooting needs have solidified the Marlin Model 336's reputation as a reliable and iconic lever-action rifle.
