Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Standard Model, introduced in 1949 as the first firearm from Sturm, Ruger & Co., established a significant legacy in the world of .22 Long Rifle rimfire pistols. Designed by William B. Ruger, this model paved the way for future iterations such as the MK II, MK III, and MK IV. Aimed at casual shooters, target enthusiasts, and plinkers, the Standard Model was marketed as an affordable yet reliable option, quickly gaining acclaim as one of the most popular .22 caliber semi-automatic pistols ever made. What sets the Ruger Standard apart is its distinctive design, which deviates from conventional pistols. Instead of a traditional slide, it features a cylindrical bolt operating within a tubular receiver, resembling rimfire rifles. This bolt can be cycled and cocked by grasping the protruding "ears" at its rear, utilizing a straightforward blowback action. The Standard Model, produced until 1982, originally showcased a blued carbon steel finish and a 4.75-inch tapered barrel, accommodating a 9-round magazine of .22 Long Rifle ammunition. Its grip frame was secured by a catch and featured hard black checkered Butaprene synthetic rubber grip panels adorned with the iconic "Red Eagle" trademark designed by Alex Sturm. The manual safety, which could only be engaged when the pistol was cocked, also functioned as a bolt hold-open mechanism. In 1954, a longer-barreled variant with a 6-inch barrel was introduced, expanding its appeal. Notable engineering changes occurred in 1971 when updated receiver dies required modifications, including the relocation of the magazine follower extension slot from right to left, known as the "A 100" frame modification. This change paved the way for future enhancements, such as the bolt hold-open feature that debuted with the MK II series in 1982. While grip panels and magazines from post-1971 models are incompatible with earlier Standard pistols, the reverse is not true, highlighting the model's enduring versatility and its evolutionary significance in the realm of .22 caliber handguns.
