The Winchester Model 70 is a bolt-action sporting rifle. It has an iconic place in American sporting culture and has been held in high regard by shooters since it was introduced in 1936, earning the moniker "The Rifleman's Rifle". The action has some design similarities to Mauser designs, and it is a development of the earlier Winchester Model 54, itself based on a Mauser 98-type action. Throughout its life, the Model 70 has been offered in many grades and styles. Winchester offered XTR (XTR = Extra) models from 1972-1989, which sported a black fore-end tip, white-line spacers, deep cut checkering, a glossed wood finish and high luster bluing. This Model 70 XTR was made in 1979, and sports a deep cut checkered walnut stock with high fluted comb & gloss finish, black forearm tip with white spacer, black grip cap with white spacer, black checkered buttpad with white spacer, jeweled bolt, 22" barrel, ramped dovetail folding rear sight, hooded ramp front sight, sling studs and serrated bolt handle.
