Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Rimfire conversions have a longstanding tradition, with iconic military rifles such as the Lee Enfield and Swiss K-31 being adapted into .22 trainers. Colt also developed a conversion kit featuring a bolt and magazine to enable standard AR-15 rifles to fire .22 LR rounds. However, these conversion kits are costly due to the need to modify existing firearms for rimfire use.
An alternative approach is exemplified by the AP 74, crafted from scratch as a .22 caliber rifle while closely resembling the original M-16. This method produces a more affordable firearm than conversions yet maintains a similar feel and functionality.
Armi Jager, based in Italy, manufactured the AP 74, which was imported in various models including versions with wood furniture and carbine configurations. Additionally, Armi Jager produced rimfire and .32 ACP versions of firearms like the FAMAS and Galil, some of which were branded as "Mitchell."
The AP 74 stands out for its visual resemblance to the M-16, featuring similar size and weight. It includes a 20-inch barrel, iron sights comparable to the original, and sling swivels compatible with a USGI web sling. Despite these similarities, there are notable differences upon closer inspection. For instance, the safety and bolt hold open mechanisms are correctly positioned but function differently from those on a true AR. The "fire" position and bolt catch also exhibit distinct variations.
A significant departure is the magazine setup, where a small 15-round magazine, reminiscent of those used in Ruger Mark II pistols, is concealed within a false 20-round AR magazine permanently integrated into the rifle. The magazine release is cleverly disguised as a screw on the side of the false magazine.
The AP-15 finds itself in the shadow of newer clones like the M&P15-22. Nevertheless, it continues to offer an enjoyable means of experiencing a classic retro rifle without the hefty price tag of thousands of dollars. The rifle's controls closely mimic those of its more powerful counterparts, making it a valuable training aid for shooters who aren't quite prepared for a .223 caliber rifle. This would be a fun little rifle to own. Finding one like this would certainly be a missed opportunity to pass up!
