Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning BSS side-by-side shotgun, produced from 1971 to 1987, is a well-crafted yet somewhat underrated piece of firearms history, having suffered from poor timing in the market. Initially introduced as a 12-gauge in 1971, followed by a 20-gauge version in 1972, the BSS was built as a boxlock shotgun, with a sidelock variation introduced in 1983. Browning’s collaboration with Miroku in Japan (1971-1977), followed by a move to Korea for assembly after 1977, led to a hybrid design that combined modern production techniques with the old-world craftsmanship of hand-fitted actions and engraved receivers. Despite its solid construction, the BSS arrived at a time when pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns dominated the market, leaving the BSS at a disadvantage. This was compounded by Browning’s reputation for producing more famous models like the A5, and the side-by-side configuration was beginning to lose its appeal to the average shooter.

The BSS, however, offered exceptional quality, with features such as automatic ejectors, a selective trigger system, and a smooth, hand-fitted action. Additionally, a Grade II model was available with more refined wood and intricate engraving on the receiver, catering to collectors and enthusiasts. A notable feature for many was the English-style stock found on the sporter model, appealing to traditionalists who preferred the look and feel of an elegant side-by-side for upland bird hunting. Unfortunately, the market’s shift away from side-by-side shotguns and the rise of more practical options led to the BSS’s relatively short production run. Still, the Browning BSS is considered by many to be a well-made, timeless shotgun that is highly regarded by collectors and shooters who appreciate craftsmanship and tradition.
