Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Python is a .357 Magnum caliber revolver formerly manufactured by Colt's Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. It was first introduced in 1955, the same year as Smith & Wesson's M29 .44 Magnum. The now-discontinued Colt Python targeted the premium revolver market segment. Some firearm collectors and writers such as Jeff Cooper, Ian V. Hogg, Chuck Hawks, Leroy Thompson, Renee Smeets, and Martin Dougherty have described the Python as the finest production revolver ever made.
In 1980, Colt introduced the Python Hunter. It was chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge and had an 8-inch ventilated rib barrel with red ramp/ white outline sights. "Python Hunter" was rollmarked on the left side of the barrel. The finish was Royal Blue and the Hunter was gripped with Colt/Pachmyr Presentation target style grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions. It came from the factory with a mounted Leupold M8-2X Extended Eye relief scope with a Rampant Colt/Leupold medallion affixed to the left side of the scope. The concept for the Python Hunter came from Colt Director of Marketing Thomas A. Thornber. The Python Hunter was manufactured only in 1981, and about 2,500 were made.
