Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
For almost 150 years, Colt's of Hartford, Connecticut produced the Single Action Army Revolver in .45 Colt. The Sheriff's Model, which lacks an ejector rod or housing on the barrel, was a popular variation. The first models, known as "ejectorless" Single Actions, were produced in the 19th century. Collectors later referred to it as the "Storekeeper's Model" or "Sheriff's Model."
The gun is essentially a Single Action Army revolver without an ejector rod or housing, making it a simpler and easier-to-carry revolver for short engagements that may not require quick reloading. Colt made these guns to order, fitting them with barrels of any length the customer wanted. The frame of the Sheriff's Model differs slightly from the frame of the standard SAA in that the former lacks a loop of steel on its front right edge that accepts the rear end of the ejector rod housing. Colt made early versions by removing the loop from regular frames, resulting in a non-symmetrical profile. However, a different frame was used for short runs of the Sheriff's Model on two occasions in the post-World War II period, resulting in a more attractive, symmetrical shape.
Reloading the gun requires the use of a short dowel to punch out fired cases. However, modern shooters would more likely use a common lead pencil or ballpoint pen for the extraction/ejection process. The new Sheriff's Model was offered with either a 3-inch or a 4-inch barrel and a choice of chamberings - .44-40 WCF, .44 Spl, and .45 LC.
