Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 48 is a double/single-action revolver chambered for .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, built on the square-butt K-frame target platform and introduced with early four-screw construction. It features a six-shot fluted cylinder with counterbored chambers and a nominal length of 1.62 inches, paired with pinned barrels offered in 4-, 6-, and 8 3/8-inch lengths, each fitted with a serrated top rib. Sight arrangements depended on barrel length: the 4-inch version typically carried a Baughman Quick Draw ramp sight. At the same time, the 6- and 8 3/8-inch models used a 1/8-inch patridge front sight matched with a micrometer-click adjustable rear. The frame included ten-groove serrations on both the backstrap and forestrap, and walnut magna-style grips with S&W medallions and the earlier diamond-pattern escutcheon. Trigger and hammer configurations varied as well: most 4-inch revolvers were equipped with a .312-inch smooth combat trigger (with an optional stop), whereas the longer-barreled guns generally featured a .265-inch serrated service trigger and a .375-inch semi-target hammer.

Optional .400-inch serrated trigger and .500-inch wide target hammer was also available. Smith & Wesson also offered an auxiliary .22 LR cylinder and yoke as a factory option. Barrel markings consisted of “22 M.R.F.” and “Smith & Wesson.” Production reportedly began in 1959, at approximately serial number K348746, and continued until 1986, placing the Model 48 among the classic target-grade rimfire magnum revolvers of its era.
