Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Heckler & Koch HK91, a semi-automatic rifle, was imported into the US in limited quantities. In 1974, only 50 units were imported with a different date code than usual. Instead of the month, the number "19" was added to spell out the year of manufacture. The reason for renaming the HK41 is unclear, but it could have changed the perception of the rifle as a paramilitary weapon to a semi-automatic sporting rifle. Gun laws in West Germany around the same time prohibited the civilian ownership of paramilitary rifles, so the HK41 was modified to become the HK91. The late pattern HK41s and HK91s are almost identical in appearance with interchangeable parts, except for the receiver markings and the retaining hole of the cocking tube end cap. The HK91 has been prohibited from further importation into the US since 1989, making it a valuable collector's item. Before 1989, only 48,817 HK91s were imported to the US. The retail price for an HK91 in the late 1970s was approximately $380 for the standard A2 models. Additionally, H&K produced limited runs of HK91s with polygonal rifle barrels that cost only $10 more than the standard versions. Today, an original HK91 can fetch over $2000, while the early 50 1974 "SACO" imports with the old style "SF" marked grip frame housings, and the 1988 and 1989 "Chantilly" models are very desirable among collectors and can bring a premium.

Licensed copies of the G3 and HK-91 were produced in Greece by the Hellenic Arms Industry or "EBO," using factory tooling purchased from Heckler & Koch. Springfield Armory, Inc. imported a small number of these HK-91 clones into the US and sold them under the designation SAR-8. However, these rifles are not to be confused with the later Springfield-made SAR-8 models, which feature cast aluminum receivers and are considered of markedly lower quality, valued at far less than the original Greek models.
