Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Nylon 66 Autoloader is a landmark firearm in the history of rifle manufacturing, renowned for its pioneering use of synthetic materials and enduring popularity among rimfire enthusiasts. Produced from 1959 to 1990 with over one million units manufactured, the Nylon 66 was the first mass-produced rifle to utilize a stock and receiver made from DuPont’s Zytel nylon—a revolutionary step away from traditional wood and steel. This design drastically reduced weight, bringing the rifle to just 4 pounds, and provided excellent resistance to weather, warping, and corrosion. Chambered in .22 LR, the Nylon 66 features a 19 5/8-inch barrel, open iron sights, and a 14-round tubular magazine located in the buttstock, all contributing to its sleek, balanced feel and consistent performance in the field. Its blowback-operated, semi-automatic action quickly earned a reputation for reliability, even when subjected to dirt, moisture, and temperature extremes. The Nylon 66 was offered in a range of eye-catching colors and limited models that have since become collectibles in their own right. The most common variant was the Mohawk Brown model, with approximately 675,000 produced. The Apache Black/Chrome variant—distinguished by its glossy black Zytel stock and chromed metal parts—saw approximately 221,000 units produced, while the Seneca Green and Black Diamond models were made in smaller numbers, around 45,000 and 56,000 respectively. A particularly rare version, the Gallery Special, was a single-shot variant produced in a limited quantity of roughly 16,474 units, designed for use in carnival or gallery shooting ranges. With its lightweight construction, low maintenance needs, and reliable action, the Remington Nylon 66 became a favorite among plinkers, small-game hunters, and novice shooters, while its unique material and colorful variations continue to attract the interest of collectors decades after its production ceased.
