Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 17, originally known as the K-22 Masterpiece, traces its roots back to the company’s pre–World War II Hand Ejector series. First introduced in 1935, the K-22 was chambered in .22 Long Rifle and quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest target revolvers of its era. Production was suspended during World War II but resumed in 1947, when the revolver was reintroduced with refinements under the Masterpiece designation. Built on Smith & Wesson’s medium-sized K-frame, the Model 17 featured a six-shot fluted cylinder, adjustable micrometer-click rear sight, and a patridge front sight, making it especially well-suited for precision target shooting. Its deep blue finish, finely tuned action, and excellent balance established it as the company’s flagship rimfire revolver. The Model 17 remained a mainstay in the Smith & Wesson catalog for decades, but by 1989, production was discontinued as the company moved away from blue carbon steel revolvers in favor of stainless steel and more modern designs. Despite its discontinuation, the Model 17’s reputation for superb accuracy, craftsmanship, and handling has made it a collectible revolver among target shooters and collectors alike.
