Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 34 is a compact, double-action revolver chambered in .22 Long Rifle, originally introduced in 1953 as the .22/32 Kit Gun before receiving its Model 34 designation in 1957. Early versions were built on the improved “I” frame, transitioning to the slightly larger “J” frame in 1960, which brought a modest increase in cylinder length from 1.32" to 1.44". Available with 2-inch or 4-inch barrels and either square or round butt frames, the Model 34 featured a six-shot fluted cylinder, early examples fitted with a serrated case-colored trigger and .375" semi-target hammer. Later production moved to a narrower .312" smooth-faced trigger. The 2-inch barrel version came equipped with a 1/10" serrated ramp front sight—visually prominent but standard in height—paired with an adjustable micrometer-click rear sight, though a limited number of fixed-sight training variants were also produced.

Finishes included blue or nickel, with three successive styles of the flat-latch thumbpiece used throughout its production. The frame came stamped with a small S&W trademark, and the barrel was marked “Smith & Wesson” on the left side and “.22 Long Rifle CTG” on the right. Weighing around 24 ounces in its 4-inch configuration, the Model 34 combined portability with precision, earning a loyal following among sportsmen, collectors, and backpackers. Production continued until its discontinuation in 1991, concluding nearly four decades of reliable rimfire service.
