Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 was introduced in 1971 as a refined successor to the original Model 39 and was released the same year as the high-capacity, double-stack Model 59. Like its predecessor, the 39-2 features an aluminum alloy frame paired with a carbon steel slide, but it incorporates several key design improvements. Most notably, it uses a shorter, redesigned extractor to address breakage issues experienced with the longer extractor on early Model 39s. Additional modifications included a revised barrel guide rod hole and an improved feed ramp for enhanced reliability. Contrary to occasional collector references, a Model 39-1 was never commercially produced—the so-called “39-1” designation is sometimes mistakenly associated with the rare 52A prototype, which was never officially marked as such.

The Model 39-2 is visually distinguished by its checkered walnut grips, a 1/8-inch serrated ramp front sight, and a fully adjustable micrometer click rear sight with a square notch, offering precise windage adjustments. The frontstrap is smooth, while the backstrap is finely stippled for added grip control. Early production pistols bear "S&W" stamped on the right side of the frame and "9mm CTG" on the extractor port, though later models—after approximately serial number A160000—are simply marked "9mm." The pistol is equipped with a smooth-faced trigger, a magazine disconnect safety, and weighs approximately 27 ounces unloaded.

Production of the Model 39-2 was discontinued in 1982, with the final unit (serial number A747148) shipped on February 15, 1983. Today, the 39-2 is considered a highly collectible piece of Smith & Wesson history, representing the company's early foray into semi-automatic pistol design for the civilian and law enforcement markets.
