Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The first Stainless Steel Combat Magnum, or Model 66 as it is better known, was manufactured on May 5, 1970 with serial number K949100. This model was officially announced by the company until one year later on July 8, 1971, when the company began shipments of its newest Combat Magnum.
Shortly after the first four inch models were in shooters' hands, orders were received for a round-butt version similar to the two and half inch Model 19. However, Smith & Wesson was operating at full capacity and could not expand its line of stainless guns to accommodate production of a t and a half inch model 66 until 1974. With this barrel length available, the factory found they were producing a full line of stainless steel revolvers that were truly a peace officer's dream.
In May of 1985 Smith & Wesson produced a special run of 4,195 units of 3" barrel model 66's for their distributor Ashland Shooting Supplies. These revolvers were the first group of 3 inch barrels produced and were serial numbers in the AFZ, AHL, AHJ, and ANA prefix series. Since this date Smith & Wesson has produced the 3 inch barrel variation on special request for various distributors.
