Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 686, which is called the Stainless Steel Distinguished Combat Magnum, was first introduced in 1981 to meet the demand for law enforcement officers and sportsmen who wanted to have a .357 magnum with a K frame grip, but having a considerable heavy weight, making controllability easier with full magnum loads.
The L frame, as this new frame size was called, was also the first handgun assigned to Smith & Wesson's new serial number series, which used three alpha characters and four numerals. The beginning serial number of the Model 686 began with serial number AAA0095. From that point on, the serial numbers are intermixed with all variations of the L frame models (586, 581, and 681.)
