Before 1980, Colt was contracted to produce 1,000 Series 70 MKIV pistols (1911-type) in 9mm Steyr caliber for an Italian firearms distributor. Colt manufactured about 100 additional MKIVs to serve as warranty replacements for the 9mm Steyr pistols. Over time, these unused warranty pistols were sold as new-in-box items in the USA. Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Government MKIV Series 70 in 9mm Steyr is a distinctive model that blends the rich history of Colt’s iconic pistols with the unique characteristics of an uncommon caliber. Manufactured under Colt's prestigious banner, this model was originally produced as part of a limited contract for the Italian market. Before 1980, Colt was tasked with creating 1,000 Series 70 pistols in 9mm Steyr for an Italian firearms distributor. The purpose of this contract was to cater to Italian laws that prohibited the sale of military calibers to the civilian market, and instead of the more typical 9mm Luger or .45 ACP chamberings, the pistols were adapted to fire 9mm Steyr ammunition. This ammunition, still produced today by Fiocchi, was relatively rare, adding an intriguing layer of uniqueness to the firearm. The Series 70 firing system, a hallmark of Colt's design, is one of the most admired features of this pistol. Incorporating the same proven mechanism used in Colt's pre-WWII models, it offers a smooth and reliable shooting experience, with the arched steel mainspring housing and short steel trigger offering both functionality and a classic aesthetic. This model features the standard safety lock, grip safety, and spur hammer, maintaining the traditional configuration that has become synonymous with the Colt Government pistols. The frame is stamped with the distinctive markings: "COLT'S MK IV/SERIES '70/GOVERNMENT MODEL/9MM STEYR AUTO CALIBER" on the left side, emphasizing both its lineage and the rare 9mm Steyr chambering.
