The Colt Single Action Army is perhaps the quintessential old west handgun, produced for over a century. It served the U.S. Army as its sidearm from 1873 into the First World War and captivated audiences on the silver screen. The advent of television and Western programs such as Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, and The Gene Autry Show breathed new interest in the guns that won the West, and the Single Action Army was reborn. Perhaps its most famous user is movie legend John “The Duke” Wayne. He appeared in nearly 200 film and television roles from the 1920s to the 1970s and is most famous as an iconic cowboy hero, essentially synonymous with American Western movies.

In 1982, Colt honored him with a commemorative issue of their Single Action Army revolvers. Only 3,100 of the John Wayne Commemorative SAA were made, which makes them highly sought after and perfect for any Colt collection!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), commonly referred to as the Peacemaker or Model P, stands as a symbol of the Old West and is one of the most influential revolvers in American history. Developed by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1873, the SAA was adopted as the standard military sidearm until 1892. Its design features a single-action mechanism with a revolving cylinder capable of holding six metallic cartridges, making it not only reliable but also powerful in terms of stopping capability. The SAA has been so iconic that it has been extensively copied and even fraudulently modified, further emphasizing its cultural significance. The revolver has undergone several generations of production, with the third generation beginning in 1976. This iteration included important design changes, such as a different barrel thread pitch and a solid cylinder bushing, marking a departure from the replaceable parts of earlier models. Production began with serial number 80,000SA, reaching nearly 100,000 units by 1978. The SAA saw a resurgence in popularity during the 1990s, particularly with the rise of Cowboy Action Shooting, leading to the introduction of Late Third Generation models or sometimes referred to as Fourth Generation. Colt currently offers the SAA in a variety of finishes and configurations, including an all-nickel option and blued versions with color case-hardening, alongside a range of barrel lengths and chamberings.

The Colt Single Action Army is arguably the quintessential Old West handgun, with a production history spanning over a century. It served as the U.S. Army's standard sidearm from 1873 through World War I, cementing its place in military history while also captivating audiences in countless Western films. The rise of television brought renewed interest in the SAA, with shows like Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, and The Gene Autry Show reigniting fascination with the firearms that defined the frontier era. Among its most iconic proponents was John “The Duke” Wayne, a legendary actor who embodied the cowboy hero in nearly 200 film and television roles from the 1920s to the 1970s. His portrayal of Western characters made him synonymous with the genre, further elevating the status of the Colt Single Action Army. In recognition of his enduring legacy, Colt produced a commemorative edition of the SAA in 1982, limited to just 3,100 units, honoring Wayne's contribution to American cinema and solidifying the revolver’s place in both history and pop culture.
