Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the late 1960s, Colt experienced a decline in its market share due to the high labor costs associated with its manufacturing processes. To counteract this, Colt launched a new product line of revolvers called the MK III series in 1969. These revolvers used a new 'J' frame and had no parts interchangeability with older models, making them a significant advancement in Colt's design since the 20th century. The MK IIIs were groundbreaking in that they were the first modern revolver designs to employ a state-of-the-art transfer-bar lock work system. The sintered parts allowed for improved fabrication tolerances and could be given a special heat treatment, resulting in a harder, more wear-resistant composition. Using these parts virtually eliminated hand fitting, significantly lowering labor costs associated with the assembly and manufacture of the MK III line.
This particular model was the premium version of its series. It featured an adjustable sight, heavy shrouded barrel, Target grips, hammer, and Colt's first Target trigger. The barrel lengths available were 4 inches, 6 inches, and 8 inches later in production. Finishes included a new high-gloss bright blue-black, bright nickel, and satin electroless nickel, also known as "Coltguard." The satin electroless nickel finish can sometimes be mistaken for stainless steel. Available calibers included .22LR, .22 Magnum, and .357 Magnum. A few Trooper Mark IIIs were specially ordered by law enforcement in .38 Special.
