Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 10 is one of the most iconic and widely recognized revolvers in firearms history. Originally introduced in 1899 as the Smith & Wesson .38 Hand Ejector Model of 1899, it later became known by various names, including the Smith & Wesson Military & Police and the Smith & Wesson Victory Model during its extensive military service in World War II. Eventually, it was designated as the Model 10 in 1957 when Smith & Wesson adopted its current model numbering system. With well over six million units produced, the Model 10 stands as one of the most prolific revolvers ever made and has earned an enduring reputation for its reliability, simplicity, and effectiveness.

The Model 10 was developed as a successor to the Smith & Wesson .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1896, marking an important step forward in revolver design. One of its most innovative features at the time was the introduction of a cylinder release latch on the left side of the frame, inspired by the design of the Colt M1889. This new latch system allowed for swing-out cylinder ejection, significantly speeding up the reloading process and enhancing operational efficiency—especially valuable for military and police applications. This revolver is a six-shot, double-action design chambered in .38 Special, a cartridge that was itself introduced alongside the Model 10. Known for manageable recoil and respectable stopping power, the .38 Special quickly became the standard for law enforcement sidearms across the United States and abroad. The Model 10’s simple fixed sights—a front blade and a rear notch milled into the top strap—contributed to its rugged reliability and made it easy to maintain under field conditions.

Throughout its over a century-long production run, the Smith & Wesson Model 10 has been offered in a variety of configurations to suit different needs and preferences. Barrel lengths have varied widely, with the most common being 2-inch, 3-inch, 4-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch models. The 4-inch version was particularly favored by police departments due to its balance between accuracy, ease of carry, and stopping power. Shorter barrels were ideal for concealed carry, while longer barrels offered enhanced accuracy for more precise shooting. The Model 10 has seen service in nearly every corner of the world. It was standard issue for countless police departments and military forces throughout the 20th century. During World War II, the Victory Model—a wartime variant of the Model 10 with parkerized finish and lanyard ring—was issued to U.S. and Allied forces, further cementing the revolver’s legacy as a trusted and effective sidearm in combat. Even in the modern age of polymer-framed semi-automatic pistols, the Smith & Wesson Model 10 remains in use and is highly regarded by enthusiasts, collectors, and professionals who appreciate its classic design, dependable mechanics, and historical significance. It represents the very essence of the traditional revolver—timeless, proven, and built to last.
