Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 559 is a robust semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm, introduced in 1980 as part of S&W’s second-generation lineup. Designed as an all-steel variant of the earlier Model 459, the Model 559 retained many of the features that made the 459 a popular choice but with a more durable and heavy-duty steel frame. The nickel finish on this example not only gives the pistol a distinctive, elegant appearance but also enhances its corrosion resistance and durability. The 4-inch barrel strikes a balance between compactness and accuracy, making the Model 559 well-suited for both duty use and personal defense. As a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) pistol, it offers versatility for users who prefer the added security of a longer first-shot trigger pull, followed by a shorter, lighter pull for subsequent shots.

The Model 559 features several design enhancements that elevate its performance and handling. It has a serrated blade front sight paired with an adjustable rear sight, providing precise sight alignment and increased accuracy, particularly for target shooting or defensive scenarios. The pistol is equipped with a 14-round double-stack magazine, offering impressive capacity for its size. It also includes a slide-mounted safety/decocking lever, which allows for safe carry with a round in the chamber. Additional ergonomic features include a serrated backstrap and forestrap, enhancing grip and control, even under more strenuous conditions. A lanyard loop on the butt ensures the pistol can be tethered, a feature that was often appreciated in military or law enforcement applications. Weighing in at a solid 30 ounces, the all-steel frame helps absorb recoil while offering excellent durability, though at the cost of a slightly heavier weight compared to alloy-frame variants. After a production run that saw 10,609 units produced—8,973 in blue finish and 1,636 in nickel—the Model 559 was discontinued in October 1982, making this example a relatively rare and sought-after piece.
