Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 681 (No Dash) NYSP is a distinctive and historically significant revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. Crafted from stainless steel, this revolver is renowned for its ruggedness, accuracy, and elegance. Built on the robust L-frame, the Model 681 shares many similarities with the popular Model 686, but it is equipped with fixed sights, as opposed to the adjustable sights found on the 686. The 4-inch barrel length offers a balance of maneuverability and accuracy, making it a practical choice for law enforcement and personal defense. The serrated ramp front sight paired with the frame-notch rear sight provides a reliable aiming system, ensuring quick target acquisition in a variety of conditions. The checkered walnut grips, featuring the classic Smith & Wesson medallions, contribute both to the revolver’s aesthetics and its ergonomic handling, offering a firm and comfortable hold for both single and double-action shooting.

The Model 681 is particularly notable for its connection to the New York State Police (NYSP). In June of 1981, approximately 500 units were shipped to John Jovino Co. and designated specifically for NYSP use. On the left side of the frame, the revolver is stamped with "NYSP," marking its special designation. Additionally, an "M" stamp is found in the yoke, indicating a modification made to the revolver. This specific model exemplifies the high standards of Smith & Wesson’s craftsmanship, blending performance with a commanding presence. The fixed sights and sturdy construction make the Model 681 an excellent choice for those who appreciate traditional revolver designs, while its historical connection to the NYSP enhances its appeal among collectors and firearm enthusiasts alike. Known for their durability and timeless design, Smith & Wesson revolvers like the Model 681 remain prized possessions for both functional use and as heirloom-quality firearms.
