Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther PP (Polizeipistole) is the original model in Walther’s legendary PP series of blowback-operated, semi-automatic pistols, developed in 1929 by the German arms manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. Created specifically for police and civilian use, the PP was one of the first truly successful double-action semi-automatic pistols, combining safety, reliability, and ease of carry in a single package. Its hallmark features include an exposed hammer, a traditional double-action/single-action trigger system, a single-column magazine, and a fixed barrel that doubles as the guide rod for the recoil spring—elements that would become defining traits of the series. The success of the PP led to the development of its smaller, more concealable variants, including the PPK, PPK/S, and PPK/E, as well as the ultra-compact TPH introduced in 1971. While each variant has its unique appeal, the PP remains the standard-bearer for the series, known for its longer grip frame, increased magazine capacity, and superior handling compared to its smaller counterparts. Over the decades, various PP series pistols have been produced in Germany, France, and the United States, with manufacturing under license by companies such as Manurhin, Interarms, and Smith & Wesson.

Adopted by police forces across Europe and favored by civilians for its dependable performance and comfortable ergonomics, the Walther PP became an influential design, inspiring firearms such as the Soviet Makarov, the Hungarian FEG PA-63, and the Argentinian Bersa Thunder 380. It also served prominently during World War II, issued to German military officers, Luftwaffe personnel, Ordnungspolizei, and Kriminalpolizei detectives. Today, Walther continues to produce the PP series, preserving the timeless blend of innovation and practicality that made the PP a cornerstone in semi-automatic pistol design.
