Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Hi-Power is one of the most iconic and widely adopted military pistols in the world, known for its innovative design, impressive magazine capacity, and enduring legacy. Originally conceived by John Browning and completed by FN Herstal's Dieudonné Saive after Browning’s death in 1926, the Hi-Power was introduced in 1935 and quickly gained recognition for its high-capacity 13-round magazine—nearly double that of its contemporaries. Its use during World War II by both Axis and Allied forces, including production under National Socialist German Workers' Party occupation and continued manufacture in Canada by John Inglis & Co., solidified its global status. Known by a variety of names such as HP-35, GP (Grande Puissance), and BAP, the Hi-Power was eventually adopted by more than 50 countries and produced both officially and unofficially in numerous nations.

After its discontinuation in 2018, demand for the Hi-Power persisted, leading to a resurgence of modernized clones and eventually, a relaunch by FN in 2022. The new FN High Power incorporated numerous enhancements, including a simplified takedown process, improved ergonomics, 17-round magazines, and fully ambidextrous controls. Despite its updated appearance and modern features, the new design diverges mechanically from the original, notably lacking the traditional Browning-style locking lugs. Nevertheless, the original Hi-Power remains celebrated for its ruggedness and reliability, operating on the short-recoil principle with a cam-based barrel unlocking system rather than the M1911's toggling link. Its single-action design necessitates cocking the hammer before firing, making it most effective when carried "cocked and locked." This blend of innovation, firepower, and global influence ensures the Browning Hi-Power’s place as a cornerstone in the history of semi-automatic pistols.
