Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Detective Special has seen several variations and limited production models throughout its storied history, reflecting both the brand's innovation and the practical needs of its users. This iconic revolver, first introduced in 1927, was a pioneer in the realm of snubnose revolvers, distinguished by its modern swing-out frame and chambering for higher-powered cartridges such as the .38 Special. Designed for concealed carry by plainclothes detectives, the Detective Special featured a six-shot capacity and was available with either a 2-inch or 3-inch barrel. Its frame, slightly smaller than that of the Colt Official Police or Smith & Wesson Model 10, struck a balance between power and concealability.

In the mid-1980s, Colt faced a significant challenge due to a lengthy strike that impacted production capabilities. To maintain output during this period, the company introduced a series of revolvers with a distinctive unpolished flat matte black blued finish. This particular variation, known as the Colt Commando Special, was produced from 1984 to 1986. Unlike the WWII Commando version of the Official Police, the Commando Special featured a matte black finish and was equipped with a rubber grip unique to these models. Despite its utilitarian appearance, the Commando Special was internally fitted and finished to the same high standards as the polished Detective Special. The introduction of the Commando Special was a practical solution during the strike but did not persist once normal production resumed. After the strike ended, Colt phased out the unpolished models, returning to their traditional finishes. Although the Detective Special had enjoyed initial success, it was eventually discontinued in 1996 due to declining sales. Despite this, the Detective Special remains a significant part of Colt's legacy, celebrated for its design innovations and its role as a reliable, concealable sidearm for law enforcement professionals.
