Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 60 is one of the most popular and recognizable .22 caliber rifles ever produced, with continuous production from 1960 until 2020. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, it features a 22-inch Micro-Groove barrel, a blued finish, and a smooth hardwood stock, combining classic styling with reliable performance. Its semi-automatic action and tubular magazine made it a favorite for small-game hunting, target shooting, and casual plinking. Known for its accuracy, thanks to Marlin’s Micro-Groove rifling, the Model 60 also incorporated practical features such as a manual and automatic last-shot bolt hold-open, making it both safe and user-friendly. The “JM” stamp on the barrel, found on earlier rifles produced in North Haven, Connecticut, is especially prized by collectors as a hallmark of Marlin’s original craftsmanship. Over its six decades of production, the Model 60 underwent small design changes—such as magazine capacity reductions and shorter barrel lengths—but it retained the same affordable, accurate, and durable character that made it a household name. With millions sold, it became known as the “most popular .22 rifle in the world.” Although production ceased when Ruger acquired Marlin in 2020 and the company has announced no plans to resume making the Model 60, the rifle’s reputation endures. Today, it is remembered as an American classic, valued both for its role as a first rifle for countless shooters and for its lasting legacy in rimfire history.
