Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Ranger, a post-1964 Model 70 Push Feed rifle chambered in .270 Winchester, represents a notable shift in manufacturing methods aimed at reducing costs without compromising reliability. One of the key changes to this model was the forging of the receiver, which was previously machined from a solid block of steel. By forging the receiver, Winchester was able to strengthen the structure while also reducing machining time and labor. The bolt was also redesigned, featuring an enclosed bolt face that fully surrounds the cartridge rim, providing better strength and support for the cartridge. This new design, which also included a two-piece construction brazed together, allowed for a more cost-effective production process while improving the rifle’s ability to handle gas in the event of a rupture. Additionally, the traditional Mauser-style non-rotating claw extractor was replaced with a wedge-shaped extractor, which, although cheaper and simpler, was less reliable and prone to jamming under certain conditions.

The rifle's design, though criticized initially for its less refined mechanics compared to earlier models, has since been refined. The introduction of hammer-forged barrels and aluminum alloy components for the trigger guard and floor plate helped further reduce weight, while maintaining strength and durability. The checkered walnut stock with impressed checkering, designed to cut manufacturing costs, also became more practical with the eventual return to machine-cut checkering. Over the years, the action has been improved, with a more stable bolt design, reducing wobble and making the rifle more reliable in normal conditions. While the simplified construction is considered less elegant, the modern push-feed action is now on par with the older controlled-feed systems in terms of performance. Today, the post-1964 Model 70 is considered a reliable and durable rifle, with the changes allowing it to maintain its place alongside newer designs, appealing to those who appreciate its improved strength and functionality.
