Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1895, designed by John Moses Browning, was a groundbreaking rifle that marked a departure from traditional lever-action designs. Unlike earlier models that used the under-barrel, gate-loading system, the M1895 featured a top-loading, fixed box magazine, allowing it to accommodate the new smokeless powder ammunition and pointed (spitzer) bullets. This design was essential for the new generation of cartridges, such as the 30-40 Krag, 30-06 Springfield, and the iconic .405 Winchester, which could not be used in tube magazine rifles due to their nose-to-primer configuration. The M1895’s adoption of the box magazine made it highly versatile and was well-suited for both military and civilian use, with notable military contracts including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Arizona Rangers, and even the Russian Tsarist Army. It was famously used by Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit during their 1909 African safari, where Roosevelt famously referred to the .405 Winchester variant as his “big medicine” for large game, including lions, elephants, and rhinoceroses.

The M1895's legacy extends well beyond its initial production, as Winchester has continued to honor the rifle's design with limited edition re-releases. In 1984, Browning partnered with Miroku of Japan to produce a high-quality reproduction of the M1895, offering three models—Grade I, Safari Centennial Custom, and Safari Centennial High Grade—available in calibers like .30-40 Krag, .30-06 Springfield, and .405 Winchester. These modern reproductions are praised for their craftsmanship, with features like better-quality walnut stocks, gold and silver decorations, and high-grade finishes. Browning’s version, in particular, is considered one of the finest reproductions, capturing the spirit of the original M1895 while incorporating modern manufacturing techniques. The influence of the M1895 can even be seen in Browning’s more recent designs, such as the Browning Lever Action Rifle (BLR). For enthusiasts of lever-action rifles, the M1895 remains an iconic choice, admired for its historical significance, innovative design, and continued production of modern iterations.
