Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Combat Commander, chambered in .45 ACP, is a refined evolution of the original Colt Commander design, a pistol created for the U.S. government's post-World War II trial to find a lighter replacement for the M1911. This trial, initiated in 1949, required the pistol to be chambered in 9mm Parabellum, weigh no more than 25 ounces, and measure less than 7 inches in length. Colt's entry into this competition was a modified version of their iconic M1911, which featured an aluminum alloy frame, a shorter 4.25-inch barrel, and a 9-round magazine. While the government trial ultimately did not lead to widespread adoption, Colt's creation went into regular production in 1950 and became the first aluminum-framed large-frame pistol to be produced on a major scale. Initially available in .45 ACP and .38 Super chamberings, this design laid the foundation for the Colt Combat Commander, which debuted in 1970 as an all-steel version.

The Combat Commander maintains the classic design of the M1911, but with enhanced durability and practicality, making it a popular choice among both military personnel and civilian gun enthusiasts. Its 4 ¼” barrel and sleek satin nickel finish add to the pistol's visual appeal, while its fixed post front sight and square notch rear sight ensure precise aiming and target acquisition. The smooth walnut grips, accented with silver Colt medallions, offer both comfort and grip security, making the Combat Commander a joy to handle and fire. The all-steel Combat Commander is differentiated from its aluminum-framed counterpart, the Lightweight Commander, by its increased weight and sturdier construction, which provides a solid feel and reduced recoil, making it ideal for both self-defense and shooting sports. The Colt Combat Commander’s rich history, solid performance, and classic design have solidified its place as one of Colt's most beloved and enduring firearms.
