Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 68 is a notable double-action revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special, built on the robust square butt K target frame with three screws. This model, manufactured between 1977 and 1988, features a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a length of 1.56 inches, a 6-inch pinned and ribbed barrel, and a red ramp front sight paired with a black stainless rear target sight, enhancing its precision. The revolver is rated for +P ammunition, making it versatile for a range of defensive and duty applications. Its walnut service stocks are adorned with S&W medallions, while the grip features a 10-groove serrated backstrap and fore strap for improved handling. The shrouded extractor rod, along with the 0.275-inch service trigger and 0.375-inch service hammer, reflects its design focused on reliability and ease of use. Specifically manufactured for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and later for the Los Angeles Police Department, the Model 68 bears distinctive markings, including "CHP" stamped on the left frame above the trigger guard and "OHB" over-stamped when sold, indicating its transition post-service. The cylinder face is marked with a "V" to signify its .38 Special chambering. Though visually similar to the Model 66, the Model 68 differs with its .38 Special stamping on the barrel and a slightly shorter cylinder. Approximately 6,055 units were produced, featuring both K and Three-letter serial prefixes. A limited edition Commemorative version, released in May 1984, showcases the CHP "Winged Wheel" engraved on the side plate and "California Highway Patrol" inscribed, celebrating the revolver’s role in law enforcement history.
