Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 70 Winchester was initially introduced in 1937 with one action length that could handle everything up to the .375 H&H Magnum. This action length is commonly known today as the "Pre-'64" Model 70 action. It was based on the Mauser design with modifications such as a coned breech, two forward-located locking lugs, and a large, stationary claw extractor which was made famous by Mauser and favored by hunters all over the world. This Winchester Model 70 action remained largely unchanged until 1964 when an entirely new design was introduced. Changing an action after more than 25 years brought some challenges to Winchester, but these were eventually resolved over a relatively short period of time. The 1968 version is the Model 70 that we know today.

Nevertheless, some shooters still felt that a short-action rifle was missing for short, high-performance cartridges like the .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester, which have become very popular with hunters. After 47 years, the United States Repeating Arms Company introduced two short-action Model 70 rifles. One is the Model 70 XTR Short-Action Featherweight, and the other is the Model 70 Short-Action Carbine. The Featherweight version comes with a 22-inch barrel, while the Carbine has a 20-inch barrel. Both are chambered for the .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, and .308 Winchester. However, one of the newest short cartridges of that time, which is the 7 mm-08 Remington, is missing from this list of chamberings. The 7 mm-08 Remington is made by necking down the .308 Winchester to 7 mm, and it is a natural fit for the short-action Model 70.
Overall, the short-action Model 70 is an exceptional hunting rifle worthy of the Winchester name.
