Between 1986 and 1987, Smith & Wesson produced 5,490 units of the Model 657 revolver. The serial number prefixes for these revolvers were ANE, ANK, ANN, and ANP. This item is identified by the serial number ANE3796 and dates back to 1986.

According to the owner, this example remains Factory Test Fired only, and when looking at the cylinder face, one can see that only “every other” cylinder chamber has traces of powder residue.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 57, introduced in 1964, is a large-frame, double-action revolver chambered for the powerful .41 Magnum cartridge. Designed primarily for law enforcement, the Model 57 was created to fill a perceived performance gap between the .357 Magnum and the .44 Magnum. This new caliber, advocated by firearms experts Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan, and Skeeter Skelton, was intended to offer better recoil control and more manageable stopping power than the .44 Magnum while still providing superior performance over the .357 Magnum. However, due to its size and considerable recoil, the Model 57 found greater appeal with civilian target shooters and hunters rather than law enforcement officers, who often preferred more manageable calibers. The revolver's large "N" frame, the same used in the famous Model 29, made it a robust and reliable firearm, capable of handling the substantial recoil of the .41 Magnum round. It came in various barrel lengths, including 4", 6", 6-1/2", and 8-3/8", and was available in highly polished blued or nickel-plated finishes.

The Model 57 was renowned for its exceptional fit and finish, boasting many of the same features found on the iconic Model 29, including a red insert front sight with a white outline, an adjustable rear sight, and a target trigger and hammer. Its oversized wooden target grips helped absorb recoil and provided better control for precision shooting. In 1986, Smith & Wesson expanded the Model 57 lineup with the introduction of the stainless steel version, the Model 657, offering a more durable option for users who desired the robust build of the Model 57 with increased resistance to corrosion. Despite its initial aim as a law enforcement weapon, the Model 57 became an enduring favorite among enthusiasts and hunters due to its power, accuracy, and the availability of the versatile .41 Magnum ammunition. The Model 57 and its successor, the Model 657, remain a testament to Smith & Wesson's commitment to producing high-quality, precision revolvers that continue to hold a significant place in firearm history.
