In 1986, to commemorate Texas' 150th birthday, a special edition of Winchester Model 94 was commissioned. Known as the Texas Sesquicentennial Winchester Commemorative, this one-of-a-kind collector's firearm was available in both rifle and carbine form or as a cased set with either both guns or a gun and matching Bowie knife.

This example of the Commemorative rifle boasts an 18 1/2" barrel. It was a limited edition of only 15,000, with the serial prefix "TEX" denoting its uniqueness. The Texas Sesquicentennial Winchester Commemorative is a cherished piece of Texas history and a must-have for any collector!

This particular example bears the serial #TEX01639, which makes it number 1,639 out of the 15,000 produced!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
To much of the world, Texas represents the epitome of America. From its colorful frontier beginnings to today's modern skyscraper cities and the home of our country's space program, Texas has become the very image of America's past and present. Similar to our nation's history, Texas was born in rebellion, grew up as a wild frontier, and has now matured into a rich and productive state that is proud of its past yet looks to the future. Texas is that mythical yet real land that gave birth to enduring legends like the Alamo and her valiant defenders Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and Co. William Travis. It was the land of the great cattle drives, of John Chisholm and the Chisholm Trail, of the great Indian leader Quanah Parker and notorious gunfighters like John Wesley Hardin and Sam Bass. And, of course, there were those who fought to protect law and order, like the world-famous Texas Rangers. Today, new legends are being made in Texas with NASA and our American astronauts, while Texas stands at the forefront of the American scene with her own superstars like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

In 1986, Texas celebrated its 150th anniversary, known as the Texas Sesquicentennial. This celebration promised to be a grand event, with parades, community celebrations, and an authentic Old West wagon train that traveled throughout the state for six months, visiting over 120 cities and towns. The wagon train was a living exhibit of Texas' frontier days, and everyone, including citizens and friends of Texas, is invited to join this trek for any length of time they wish. As a reminder of Texas' 150th birthday, a special Winchester Model 94 was commissioned. This unique collector's firearm, the Texas Sesquicentennial Winchester Commemorative, was available in rifle or carbine form or as a cased set of both guns. The Winchesters are chambered in .38-55 caliber, which was one of the original chamberings of the 1894 models. Incidentally, the cartridge is still available in factory ammunition today.

The carbine is equipped with an 18-1/2-inch blued round barrel and is adorned with two gold-plated barrel bands and a receiver. The receiver is roll-engraved with scenes from the history of Texas and features the inscription "Texas Sesquicentennial." The barrel near the receiver has "1836-TEXAS-1986" etched in gold. The carbine also has a gold-plated commemorative medallion embedded in the buttstock. The buttstock and forend are made of beautifully figured select walnut and have a neat checkered pattern with a unique space pattern. The production of the Texas Sesquicentennial carbine is limited to 15,000 guns, which have been serial-numbered TEX-1 through TEX-15,000.

The Texas Sesquicentennial Winchesters' rifle version was unlike any commemorative arm made so far. These guns feature 24-inch round and tapered barrels with full-length magazines. Each rifle has an authentic-type full buckhorn rear and a Marble gold bead front sight. Unlike the carbine, the rifle's receiver is blued, with scenes from Texas history etched on each side in 22-karat gold by the well-known firm of Aurum Etchings of Garland, Texas. The top of the receiver and the barrel are decorated with gilt embellishments and the legend, "1 of 1500." The rifle's lever is decorated in the same manner as the carbine's.

Texas is a vast state that is not only known for its size but also for the spirit of its people. Few states can match the loyalty of Texans, and even fewer are recognized across the globe, such as Texas. Texas offers a diverse representation of American life, from its immense plains and ranchlands to its eastern bayous and ultramodern cities of glass and steel. These Texas Winchesters are a fitting tribute to a land with a thrilling history and a promising future. They capture the essence of the wild, untamed frontier years, yet their refinement and luxurious finish reflect modern Texas and its elegant, cultured society. With these exceptional firearms, anyone can own a piece of Texas history, regardless of where they reside. After all, it's commonly said by Texans, "There are two types of people in this world: Texans and those who wish they were Texans!"
