Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1950s Remington Arms was searching for a 22 rimfire semi-auto rifle design that could be inexpensively produced with a minimum of machining or hand fitting. What they came up with was the Nylon 66, a unique design in which the gun stock also acts as the receiver holding the bolt, trigger assembly and barrel together. In most cartridge long guns; the receiver, barrel, bolt can be removed from the stock as one unit. Not so with the Nylon rifles.
First introduced in 1959, the Nylon 66 was named after Duponts designation for the plastic used to make the rifle stock. Cast in two parts, each half of the stock was bonded together to form a strong rigid receiver for the other rifle parts, requiring little if any fitting. It was the first mass-produced rifle to feature a stock made from a material other than wood and was the first member of the Nylon family. For this reason, it was a huge gamble for Remington but ended up being so well-liked other variants were added.
Chambered in .22 LR, Remington made this version of the nylon rifle exclusively for K-Mart between 1987-89. These rifles were the same as the Nylon 77 and 10C but had a green stock and black matte receiver and barrel. It was called the Apache 77 and is marked as such on the grip cap.
