Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1965, Jim Sullivan joined Ruger with the task of developing a bolt-action big game rifle that could compete with the established giants of the industry, such as Winchester’s Model 70 and Remington’s Model 700. Sullivan, who had previously played a key role in bringing the M16 into production at Armalite, brought his considerable expertise to the project. The result was the Ruger M77, a rifle that blended Sullivan’s innovative approach with Bill Ruger’s love for the Mauser 98. While the M77 shared key elements with the Mauser, such as the twin forward locking lugs and 90-degree bolt lift, Ruger’s influence was apparent in features like the hinged floorplate, the flanged left-side bolt sleeve, and the tang safety. Despite these similarities, the M77 was a distinctly new design, particularly in its construction.

Sullivan pushed for the use of investment casting for both the receiver and bolt—an unconventional approach at a time when milling from solid bar stock was the norm. Introduced in 1968, while it initially received a lukewarm reception, it ultimately became one of the most successful big game rifles, selling over 1 million units over the next 21 years. There were many variants of the M77 over the years, which kept the rifle relevant and appealing to hunters and shooters alike. Among these, the M77 Mark II, introduced in the early 1990s, featured improved accuracy and better trigger systems. Other variants, such as the M77 Hawkeye, came with modern updates to cater to new shooter preferences, such as synthetic stocks and stainless steel barrels. Each iteration of the M77 remained faithful to the original design principles while integrating refinements that kept it competitive in a constantly evolving market.
