Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 64, chambered in .38 S&W Special, is a revered revolver known for its robust performance, durability, and versatility. As the second all-stainless steel revolver produced by Smith & Wesson, following the Model 60, it became a popular choice among law enforcement agencies across the United States, particularly in high-humidity environments where rust and corrosion were major concerns. The 4-inch barrel provides a well-rounded balance of accuracy and maneuverability, making it suitable for both on-duty use and personal defense. Its fixed serrated ramp front sight and frame-notched rear sight contribute to quick target acquisition, while the checkered walnut grips with Smith & Wesson medallions ensure a secure and comfortable hold. The double-action mechanism offers smooth and responsive operation, whether for rapid firing or precise control in more measured shots.

The Model 64’s connection to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) makes it particularly desirable among collectors. The revolver was one of the NYPD’s authorized duty weapons from 1987 to 1993, when they were replaced by 9mm semi-automatics. A distinct feature of the Model 64 used by the NYPD is the "NY-1" stamp inside the frame’s yoke, indicating its service with the department. The left side of the frame is marked with "BKN1854," which is likely an additional reference to its inventory or batch. Early versions of the Model 64 featured a lightly brushed stainless finish, which, after some wear, would develop a sheen. Later models were updated with a more durable matte, frosted finish to prevent this issue. The NYPD-issued Model 64 revolvers were produced in several variations, with the 4" barrel standard being the most common, followed by 3" and 2" barrel configurations. The estimated total production of the M64 NY-1s was 5,504 guns, and these revolvers are highly prized due to their historic significance and quality. They were the first stainless steel revolvers used by the NYPD, marking the transition to more modern, corrosion-resistant firearms within the department.
