Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1950s, Remington Arms, then owned by DuPont, set out to design a cost-effective .22 LR semi-automatic rifle that could be mass-produced with minimal machining and hand fitting. Leveraging DuPont’s innovative synthetic material, Zytel 101 nylon, Remington engineers created a revolutionary design in which the rifle’s stock also functioned as the receiver, housing the bolt, trigger group, and barrel. This eliminated the need for a traditional metal receiver and significantly reduced production costs. Introduced in 1959, the result was the Remington Nylon 66—the first mass-produced rifle to use a synthetic stock and receiver. Its lightweight, corrosion-resistant construction and excellent reliability made it an immediate success. The Nylon 66 featured a 19 5/8-inch barrel, a 14-round tubular magazine in the buttstock, and was available in several colors, including Mohawk Brown, Seneca Green, and Apache Black.

A notable variant, the Apache 77, was produced exclusively for Kmart between 1987 and 1989. Chambered in .22 LR and nearly identical to the Nylon 77 and 10C, the Apache 77 was distinguished by its green stock and its matte black finish, and it featured a 10-round detachable magazine. Only approximately 54,000 of these rifles were made, and today, both the Nylon 66 and its variants remain highly regarded for their forward-thinking design and reliability.
