Renowned firearms historian R.L. Wilson, along with USHS Chief Gunsmith Jeff Belcher, worked closely with Uberti to ensure that this exceptional reproduction of the iconic Colt Paterson revolver would be the finest of its kind ever produced. This reproduction is based on an original .36 caliber belt model “Texas Paterson" with serial number 755, which was manufactured circa 1838–1840 by Samuel Colt’s Patent Arms Manufacturing Company in Paterson, New Jersey. This five-shot revolver represents the most historically accurate replica of an early Colt ever attempted.

The United States Historical Society Texas Paterson is presented in a wooden double-tiered display case. The upper tier, lined in brown velvet, houses the revolver and a full set of meticulously recreated accessories, modeled after the original Paterson Colt No. 755, as depicted on page 50 of the Paterson Colt Pistol Variations book. These included accessories, featuring a three-handled bullet mold, screwdriver, and brass cleaning rod, each with turned walnut grips. Also included is a brass plunger-type powder flask and a silvered capper bearing the early Patent Arms Manufacturing Co. logo (Sam Colt’s iconic 1830s rampant Colt flanked by crossed Paterson revolvers). Beneath the main compartment is a drawer containing a special autographed edition of Paterson Colt Pistol Variations, signed by authors Philip R. Phillips and R.L. Wilson. This acclaimed volume, richly illustrated with detailed photographs and period artwork, is widely considered the most authoritative reference on the subject.

Each United States Historical Society Texas Paterson revolver and accompanying book is part of a limited edition of just 1,000 sets. This example bears the serial number 12, making it #12 out of the 1,000 produced.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The reproduction retains the elegant lines and authentic mechanics of the original Texas Paterson, measuring 12 1/2 inches in length and weighing 2 pounds, 12 ounces. It is finished in a rich, dark blue, complemented by color-case-hardened components, such as the loading lever, hammer, backstrap, and frame floorplate. The floral engraving pattern from the original has been carefully reproduced, and the six German silver-inlaid bands found on the antique model have also been incorporated, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

One of the most impressive features of the USHS reproduction is its use of genuine mother-of-pearl grips, an expensive and authentic touch not often seen in modern replicas. The only departure from the original is a minor one: in an effort to prevent future counterfeiting, a square-cornered barrel wedge, similar to those found on 1851 Navy Colts, has been used instead of Paterson’s historically correct rounded-bottom wedge. However, this subtle variation does not detract from the revolver’s overall authenticity or visual impact. It remains a faithful representation of what a factory-fresh Paterson Colt might have looked like in the 1830s. Unlike many modern commemorative firearms, this Paterson replica avoids unnecessary embellishments that could undermine its historical integrity.

With original Paterson Colts commanding prices well into six figures, the United States Historical Society’s Samuel Colt Texas Paterson replica stands as a fitting tribute to the revolver that launched the Colt legacy. It is a first-class effort—beautifully crafted, historically respectful, and destined to be treasured not only by collectors but by anyone with an appreciation for the artistry and innovation of early American firearms.
