Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 16 is a .32 S&W Long double-action revolver built on the square-butt K-frame, previously known as the K-32 Masterpiece. The postwar version introduced several key updates, including a new hammer block for enhanced safety, a serrated barrel rib, and a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight. It features a 6-shot, fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.56", a 6-inch pinned barrel, and checkered walnut magna-style grips with S&W medallions and a diamond around the screw escutcheon. The finish is blue only. Early postwar models came with a 6-groove backstrap and forestrap, later updated to a 10-groove, serrated backstrap. Due to its relative scarcity, tracking serial number ranges for the Model 16 is difficult, but some Model 16-2 revolvers fall within the serial number range K827718-K827829, while some Model 16-3 revolvers are found in the range 3K29411-30791. Weighing 38.5 oz, approximately 3,630 units were manufactured between 1947 and 1974.

In 1989, Smith & Wesson reintroduced the Model 16, now chambered in .32 H&R Magnum. This updated version was built on the square-butt K target frame with a 3-screw design and was offered in 4", 6", and 8-3/8" barrel lengths with a full-lug ribbed barrel. It retained the 6-shot, fluted cylinder (1.56" nominal length) and blue finish, while adding the option for a target hammer and target trigger. The reintroduced model also featured Goncalo Alves wood combat grips with finger grooves and S&W medallions, a 1/8" Patridge front sight, and an adjustable micrometer-click rear sight. Variations included the 4" model with a .375" semi-target hammer and a .312" smooth combat trigger, while the 6" and 8-3/8" models featured a .500" target hammer and a .400" serrated target trigger. All models had a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap. With a total production of about 8,800 units across the three barrel lengths, the reintroduced Model 16 was manufactured from 1989 to 1992.
