Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 59, a semi-automatic pistol, was developed by Smith & Wesson in the late 1970s as a police and military firearm. Over time, the Model 59 saw several improvements with the introduction of newer models such as the 59-2, 59-3, and others. However, Smith & Wesson later released an entirely new version of the gun known as the 5904, which was a significant upgrade from its predecessors. This newer version was designed to meet the needs of law enforcement and military personnel, and it featured several improvements over the previous models. The 5904 had a 14-round magazine and either fixed or adjustable sights, which made it easier to aim and shoot accurately. The new single wrap-around grip was also a substantial improvement over the previous two-panel grip, providing a more comfortable and secure grip for the user.

The new single wrap-around grip was also a substantial improvement over the previous two-panel grip, providing a more comfortable and secure grip for the user.
Furthermore, the trigger pull was much better than previous Model 59 versions, and the slide featured an ambidextrous decocking lever. This allowed the user to quickly and easily decock the hammer without having to take their finger off the trigger or switch hands. The lever's ambidextrous design also made it easier for left-handed users to operate the gun. Let's take a closer look at the Model 5904 and its features. The gun was only in production from 1989 until 1998, making its production life relatively short. It has a 4-inch barrel and weighs 26.5 ounces, which was relatively light for its time. Most handguns at that time were made entirely of steel, which made them much heavier. The 5904 has a single-action/double-action trigger pull, which means that the first shot requires a long double-action trigger pull unless you manually cocked the hammer. Many people struggled with the transition from the first double-action shot to the remaining single-action shots. The single-action trigger pull was much shorter and smoother, resulting in more accurate shots.
After chambering a round, you would decock the hammer, remove the magazine, insert another round, and then choose between keeping the decocking lever down for safety or pushing it back up to fire the gun by pulling the trigger. This caused some confusion for many users, who had to decide whether to carry the 5904 with the safety on or off. However, the safety feature was later removed in subsequent models in response to user feedback. Smith & Wesson later developed double-action-only handguns with a long but very smooth trigger pull for each shot. These guns eliminated the need for a safety switch and made it easier for users to shoot accurately and quickly. Overall, the Model 5904 was a significant improvement over its predecessors and a popular choice for law enforcement and military personnel during its production life.
